How important is connecting with your pet for creating dog portraits?

A person must have a pet portrait in their house. You can buy your pet’s portrait from the internet. All you have to do is pay a certain amount to the artist, ad cover the shipping cost. This way you can have the portrait delivered at your doorstep. There are many websites on the internet from where you can buy a portrait online. Online orders are not limited to just dog portraits.  You can get portraits for all of your pets; be it a guinea pig, cat, horse, turtle, anything!

Or, you can create one yourself. Painting the portrait by hand gives you more time to connect with your pet. Following guidelines can help you in creating portraits yourself by explaining all that you need to know beforehand:

Know your friend:

There is only one way to capture the essence of your furry and fuzzy friend in pet portraits; get to know it better. You cannot create a sketch with just one photo, and never meeting the pet. Because then it will be just a sketch, not a stunning and splendid masterpiece. It’s not about painting a sketch, but painting a personality. And to paint a personality, you need to experience it firsthand. Therefore, meeting the pet is a crucial step to learn about its personality, attributes and manners.

Gather reference materials:

As discussed earlier, in order to capture the essence of your pet for its portrait, one reference picture can never be enough. If you cannot meet the pet, make sure to have ample reference photos of the pet. The reference photos should be of different angles and under different lights. You can even ask for pictures of the pet’s favourite places, toys, and accessories etc. to incorporate in the portrait. This can help you set a theme or help you decide the scene of the portrait.

Get your sketch ready and approved:

Another crucial step is to get your sketches approved. For this, you need to make various sketches with different compositions. Then you can compare them and choose the final composition for the portrait. They don’t have to be very serious or monotonous. You can take your very own spin on pet portraits, make them full of life by capturing your pet’s laugh, or your pet’s mischievous grin. Get your things ready and paint away!

Set the tones:

Once you’re done with your sketch, you can start painting/drawing. For this, you should start with an underpainting. An underpainting sets the mood for your portrait and brings it out, even more, when the portrait is complete.

In this way, you can create beautiful dog portraits or portraits for your pet and reward your pet with your love!
