All one needs to know about aquarium water treatment

The aquarium water treatment is an important matter for the fish in the aquarium. Unfortunately, more people believe that only frequent food supply and regular aquarium clear water changes are the only things needed for the fishes in their aquariums.  They do not know that the quality of water in the aquarium decided by the fish tank water treatment can also affect the fishes in their aquariums.

There are a few things which one must know before spending any money on a dechlorinator. How the local company is carrying out aquarium water treatment is an important thing one must be knowing? There are various methods in practice for producing and purifying aquarium clear water. Various chemicals are being used based on the quantum of impurity and the method of purification used.

The Environmental protection agency of America has approved many aquarium clear water procedures for the treatment of drinking water to make it free from germs. Chlorine is the most common chemical used for water purification. Even though, it produces some byproducts which can cause illness if this water is used for a long period of time.

Different processes are there which allow mixing of safe levels of chlorine in drinking water.  When chemicals containing chlorine like calcium hypochlorite are added in limited quantities to water, they mix and spread out, killing the germs and the water remains safe for drinking purposes.

Another common chemical used for aquarium water treatment is chloramine.  Chloramine is a combination of chlorine and ammonia.   A de-chlorinator will only neutralize the chlorine in your tank. But chloramine can neutralize both chlorine as well as ammonia in the water. This is very important for fish tank water treatment as ammonia forms the first stage of the nitrogen cycle which leads to more nitrites, nitrates etc. Use of chloramines in water purification has increased considerably as it is considered as more safe for humans.

In addition to this water purification method it will be necessary to invest in heavy metal neutralizer if your water has more heavy metals dissolved in it. This matter is very hard to judge as the quality of water is widely dependent upon the area where you are living.

Even minerals and vitamins can be used as electrolytes for aquarium water treatment. Often tap water and bottled water contain vitamins like calcium, zinc, magnesium in small quantities. It is not often necessary to add vitamins if you do not suspect shortage of these vitamins.

The question whether any additional fish tank water treatment is needed for your aquarium water is not an easy question to answer.  It is based on two important factors. One is what water source you are using for your aquarium. Is it tap water or water from any natural sources?  The second one is the area where you are living. If you are not able to decide on the quality of water in your aquarium, it is better to use a de-chlorinator that deals with ammonia, chlorine and chloramine.
