China is well-known for its traditional spas and massage techniques. Massages are so much popular there, that according to a survey of 2016, massage therapists were the highest paid professionals in the urban Chinese industry. Massage has been an integral part of Chinese medicine, with records as old as 2nd century BCE.
What makes it so popular there?
The first and foremost reason for massages being so popular there is their price. Compared to the western world, massages here are quite cheap and affordable. This makes them all the way more popular among tourists from all around the world.
So let's start unravelling the magic of Chinese massage parlours!
Unlike other techniques, Chinese massage parlor techniques focus on promoting overall health by allowing the smooth flow of “qi” or energy throughout the body.
“Qi” literally means breath or air. It is a very important part of eastern philosophies. The Chinese therapists believe that energy flows through one’s body in particular patterns, called meridians. Any sort of blockages to the path of flow, or deficiency of the energy in vital organs, is believed to give rise to various illnesses.
Techniques followed in Chinese Massage –
There are mainly two types of techniques followed:
· Tui na- This technique has similarity to deep tissue massage. It includes kneading, chopping and stretching to remove pain and blockages in the muscular system.
· Zhi na- This includes processes like pinching and pressing on the surface of the skin. This is very similar to acupuncture, reflexology, qigong
In both techniques, the therapist aims to release both physical and mental tension from the body, to restore balance in the body.
