Pet Plant- Marimo; is very attractive and useful plant. The origin of this plant is very mysterious and very romantic at the same time.
Marimo was originally discovered in Lake Zell, Austria. Then it was seen in Lake Akan, Japan and it was credited to the love legend. How true is it? We don’t know for sure but we know for the fact that it is found in more in cold temperate regions. What makes is mysterious is, marimo is not grown anywhere but it is found native to Japan, Austria, Scotland, Iceland, Ukraine and Estonia.
The name marimo was given by Japanese Botanist, Takuya Kawakami. Mari means like a bouncy ball; mo means aquatic plants. It is called moss because calling it algae makes it less appealing.
So, what do they eat?
They don’t even eat fertilizers of any kind; they cook their own through photosynthesis. The use of fertilizer may help enhance growth, but it has the growth rate like the walk of snail. It grows 5mm per year. They divide in half and form baby marimo due to water current in their natural habitat. It’s a belief that if you cut in half and roll it forms spheres and voila. Baby marimo at home.
